Matt Ryan teases Constantine: 'This is a new kind of superhero'
Matt Ryan has hinted that Constantine will cast a spotlight on an atypical superhero.
NBC's adaptation of DC Comics' Hellblazer stars Ryan as a dark magician who becomes humanity's last hope against conspiring dark forces.
In an interview with USA Today, Ryan said that John Constantine is unlike fellow DC Comics heroes Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Arrow.
"He's
not a superhero with a cape, someone with a special power. He's just a
working-class guy who uses cunning, wit and street charm to get what he
wants," the actor said.
"His mission is to save humanity from the evil of the world and the
good forces. He doesn't like either side interfering in humanity."
Ryan
added that John Constantine's self-destructive tendencies come from the
emotional damage that the character has experienced while trying to
protect the earth.
Justified star Joelle Carter to appear in Constantine
"You
get a lot of wit and lightness, but it comes from a defence mechanism
within him," he explained. "He's so tormented, because he's seen all
these demons and dark stuff and pain in the world.
"The way he deals with it is by laughing about it."
Constantine will also feature DC Comics favourites Papa Midnite (Michael James Shaw), The Spectre (Emmett Scanlan) and Nergal (Miles Anderson).
NBC airs the season premiere of Constantine tonight (October 24) at 10pm ET. Watch a trailer below:
