Fantastic beasts: Which magical creatures will get a starring role in the new Harry Potter film? |
After a cryptic tweet from J.K. Rowling last week, the author has confirmed that Warner Brothers will be making three new Harry Potter films.
The new trilogy, written by Rowling herself, will be inspired by Harry Potter's Hogwarts textbook 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' by fictitious author Newt Scamander.Fantastic Beasts was published in 2001 with the proceeds from the sale going to Comic Relief.
5 questions we're asking about the new J.K. Rowling film adaptations
David Yates, who directed the final instalment of the Harry Potter series, is already on board for the first new film, which will be set before Harry's time and will be neither a prequel nor a sequel to the original eight movies.
Used by the students in Hogwarts to aid their studies, the Fantastic Beasts textbook, which details a number of magical creatures, was supposedly first published in 1927.But what sort of beasts can we expect to find in the upcoming films?
Pixie
You may remember these pesky creatures from the Chamber of Secrets, when Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart let them loose in the classroom during a lesson.
Measuring just eight inches, these aren't the most fearful creatures in the wizarding world, but they are wicked fast and can fly, making them extremely difficult to catch.
It was Neville Longbottom who discovered just how annoying the pixies can be after they hoisted him up by his ears and left him hanging by the cloak from a chandelier.
Size: 8 inches
Skin colour: Electric Blue
Danger rating: 3/10
Troll
It doesn't take long for Harry Potter to come face to face with a troll after arriving at Hogwarts.
Reaching a height of around 12 feet and weighing in at around a ton, trolls are very violent and aggressive despite their immense stupidity.
Unfortunately, as trolls are partial to a bit of raw human flesh, coming into contact with them can be incredibly dangerous.
Size: 12ft
Skin colour: grey/brown
Danger rating 7/10
Phoenix
The phoenix is one of the more magical creatures in the world of Harry Potter, and just one among many of its startling abilities is its power to regenerate itself.
This means that the phoenix can survive the Killing Curse, and is immune to the gaze of the Basilisk - which made it extremely useful to Harry Potter in the second book.
As well as being able to disappear and reappear whenever it chooses, undoubtedly one of the most precious abilities of the phoenix is the healing power of its tears.
Size: similar to a swan
Skin colour: scarlet
Danger rating: 4/10
Centaur
A centaur is another hybrid creature with the head, torso and arms of a human and the body and legs of a horse.
At Hogwarts, a herd of centaurs live in the Forbidden Forest and are known to be somewhat unfriendly and private.
Most known for their stargazing talents, they tend to avoid contact with witches or wizards, despite possessing human intelligence.
Size: 7ft or more
Skin colour: white or tanned
Danger rating: 6/10
Merpeople
Merpeople are magical creatures that live underwater, and are half-human, half-fish, although they are not like the mermaids depicted in fairy stories.
They have grey skin, green sea-weed like hair and menacing yellow eyes.
Harry is forced to venture into the realm of the merpeople during the Triwizard tournament in the fourth book, The Goblet of Fire.
Size: human size
Skin colour: green/grey
Danger rating: 5/10
Werewolf
Upon the rising of a full moon, any human infected by 'lycanthropy', which is a magical illness spread when a transformed werewolf bites a human, will then turn into a werewolf themselves.
These beasts do not exactly resemble a regular wolf and will go on mindless killing sprees during their transformations.
Remus Lupin, Harry's Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in the Prisoner of Azkaban, and member of the Order of the Phoenix, was infected as a young boy and though he managed to keep the condition under control, there is no cure.
Size: Slightly larger than a wolf
Skin colour: grey/black
Danger rating: 9/10 when transformed
Hippogriff
Rather more fearful than the humble Pixie, the Hippogriff could cause serious injury, or even death if it takes a dislike to the person approaching it.
With the head and wings of a giant eagle and the body and legs of a horse, the Hippogriff is known to be an intensely proud creature and should be treated with respect.
Each individual should bow, and wait for the creature to bow in return before approaching, while maintaining unblinking eye contact at all times.
Size: 8ft
Skin colour: grey/brown
Danger rating 5/10
Basilisk
The Basilisk turns up in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and almost closes the school after students and animals in the Hogwarts castle were either killed or paralysed by its stare.
Growing up to fifty feet in length the Basilisk is a dark green colour, with large yellow eyes that can instantly kill anyone who looks directly in to them.
As a giant serpent, the Basilisk can only be controlled by a witch or wizard that can speak Parseltongue.
